Fine impression. Heinrich Scherer was a devout Jesuit, and professor of mathematics at Munich. His 'Atlas Novus' contained eleven world maps and maps of all other parts which showed the spread of Catholocism and Jesuit missions. Finely engraved by either Leonard Hecknauer, Joseph � Montalegre, or Matthäus Wolffgang. North polar projection with California shown as an island and an almost complete outline of Australia and a sketchy coastline of New Zealand. SHIRLEY: Mapping of the World. No.628.
