Finely coloured; minor expert restoration to lower part of centrefold, very light vreasing and some marginal soiling, otherwise a fine example.
The first plate of Europe, with the Roman text nameing 'AFRICAE PARS', although the text on the verso is in Spanish. Van den Broecke states in error in his 'Ortelius Atlas Maps' reference work that the earliest Spainish text edition of 1588 has the 'Africä Pars' in a curved style and does not record this example. After the Mercator map of 1554.
