MERCATOR, Gerard. Septentrionalium Terrarum descriptio.
Amsterdam, Jodocus Hondius, 1609, First French text edition. 365 x 390.
Fine bright original colour; very minor marginal soiling otherwise an excellent example.
A fine circular map of the North Pole. It shows many of the misconceptions regarding this area - with two islands invented for the locations of magnetic north. Note also the inclusion of the mythical island of Friesland to the south-west of Iceland, complete with many place-names. This island is also one of the detailed inset maps filling three of the spandrels. A classic map. KOEMAN: Me 19.
